Schedule of Events for April 11-12, 2008

Featured Presentation:  "Crime and Environment" with Dr. Marcus Felson

On Saturday, April 12, 2008, Dr. Marcus Felson, a world renowned criminologist and researcher, will speak and entertain questions about his book, Crime and Nature.  This is the first text to provide students with a perspective for thinking about crime and how modern society can reduce crime's ecosystem and limit its diversity.  This is a unique opportunity for students, faculty and practitioners to engage the author in an open discussion of his theory, research, and evaluation of criminal justice policy and practice.

The event will be held from 10am until 4pm on Saturday, April 12, 2008 in The Bonnie.  The session includes a catered box lunch and a presentation by a regional crime analyst.  The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required.  To register, log on to the Radford University Conference Services website at:  http://www.radford.edu/~conf-serv/

Questions about registration should be directed to Conference Services at conf-serv@radford.edu or 540-831-5800.  Questions about the event may be directed to:  Nicole Hendrix, Ph.D., 540-831-6161, pnhendrix@radford.edu.

Sessions will be organized based on sub-fields within criminal justice; including law enforcement, corrections, courts and legal careers, wildlife and environmental enforcement, graduate school, and federal and state agency employment.  The Radford University Department of Criminal Justice faculty will be in attendance, along with professionals and practitioners from across the field. Panelists will present advice, strategies and tips for seeking employment in a variety of criminal justice fields.

Each attendee will receive a folder containing materials related to obtaining a career in criminal justice. Many of these focus on general interviewing and resume/cover letter construction, along with a number of handouts related to specific criminal justice career fields. Much of this material is subject-specific and includes suggestions for successful application processes. These faculty-prepared materials and other employment links will also be made available on the employment section of the department’s website.
